Marathonfest Pace Group Weekend Run Saturday July 30

Hi
Great run this past weekend, it was nice to take a little mileage break. Congratulations to those of you who braved Clermont, it was a great run!! A special "welcome to the club" to Hillery and Kevin who ran Clermont for the first time and kudos to Kevin who made it all the way up Hospital Hill without stopping on his first try!! Well done to everyone!!
Before we get down to business, a couple of items of note: If you are thinking of running Savannah this year it is getting close to closing so hurry up and get off the fence!!! Also the next road trip race we have coming up is the Asheville Half, a number of us have done this race the last few years and it is a fun race with great post race goodies. A number of us have already signed up for this race again and it is close to closing.
Now down to business. This week the mileage stays on the shorter side but we go to Apopka. However, for those of you who need to stay closer to home or who ran Clermont last week and have had enough of hills for a while, we will also offer a WP run. As noted in Susan's mail below, on these shorter runs we can stick a little closer to marathon pace, however a lot depends on the temps and how you feel. It is probably better to start off the first half of the run at a slower pace then if you are feeling ok try picking up the pace. This heat and humidity has a way of sneaking up on you so be careful.

WEEKEND MILEAGE- The pace for this run should ideally be AT your goal race pace. However, factor in the hills and the heat index and pace yourself accordingly!

Chicago/St. Louis/USMC/Savannah/ING NYC............10-14 miles
Space Coast.......................10 miles
Jacksonville.........................10 miles
Disney.................................8 miles
GOOFY...............................8 miles
HALF-MARATHONS.............6 miles

The Plan: Meet in Apopka at 4:45 Start at 5:00
We will cover 6,8,10,and 14 miles!!!

For those running in WP, meet Ray @ Cady Way for 12 at 5:30. Route will be announced

Have a good week and look forward to seeing you on Saturday!!

Weekend Pace Group Run Saturday July 23

Hi
Congratulations to everyone who completed their first long run of the session last weekend and A Big THANK YOU to Krystal and Hillery for doing a great job filling in for some wayward group leaders!
From all accounts it was a great time at Ruthie's send off Party Part II… unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, we have no pictures!!
Hung ran the Badwater Ultra last week and while he did run into some issues he put in a great effort and he made us proud!!!! We are hoping to get some pictures.
Also this weekend I ran a half marathon called the Scream!!! It was a great race with a beautiful course and wonderful temps at 52 that can produce some great PR's (however not for me). I highly recommend it!!! Just be aware if you run this race half way aggressively you will know why they call it the Scream!!!
This week we will drop back mileage which will allow us to run closer to our marathon pace (see Susan's mail below).
Also this weekend we have a optional 7.5 mile run on Sunday in the hills of Clermont. Krystal and I will be in Clermont for anyone interested in joining us. Start time will be 5:45 if anyone needs directions to the start just mail me.
WEEKEND MILEAGE- Cut back weekend!
Chicago/St. Louis/USMC/Savannah/ING NYC............10 miles
Space Coast.......................10 miles

The Scream: 13.1 Miles of Pure Hill !!!

Great Race, Perfect Weather, it definitely lived up to its name!!!  The weather couldn't have been better (at least for summertime).... around 52 at the start and cloudy.  During the race we had a gentle rain on and off, I don't think the temp got above 62 all day.  The Course.....lets just say it is definitely a PR course, if you run it smart and don't have "issues".  Although it was not a PR for me,  it was a fun course and I met some great people.  Met up with a couple of people from a running group in Charlotte, Jack and Hazel, who took me under their wing, helped me through the last few miles, then after the race they introduced me to others in their group who had made the trek from Charlotte.  Jack placed third in his age group and Hazel, who had run the Grandfather Mountain Marathon the week before, placed second in hers!!! Jack runs tri's and has run Ironman's, Hazel said she runs about 6 marathons a year and has been running since 97  She is wicked fast on down hills.  When they were presenting the awards they got to my age group and he said the winner of the 60 to 64 age group is Terry Smith from.....long pause as he stares at his sheet and blinks his eyes... from Orlando!! (like who from Orlando  is going to win anything with hills in it!  It was almost the same reaction as from the salsa commercial when the guy says "New York City!!!")  But I at least I got a big cheer from my new running buddies from Charlotte.
As far as the race living up to its name.... I did not feel it after the race, but the next day on the drive home, I was literally SCREAMING trying to get out of the car to walk around, get gas, get food... the same type of feeling I had after my first marathon!!!

Lived up to it's name... it is 13.1 Miles of Pure Hill!!!!!
Cloudy start
I have no idea who these people are but what the heck..... I look like I could be with them!!!

The Charlotte Road Running Club who took me under their wing. Hazel is in the pink and Jack is in the Blue. Although I was told the other gentlemen's names I can't recall them right now.
Hazel, myself, another person from the Charlotte club, and Jack...  we were a little off guard when they took the picture.  We only got one shot, it was raining  and our awards were running :)

Moon Pie's House
Post Race Lunch.... those of you who ran the Wild Hare last year will remember this

Pace Group Run Saturday July 16

HI

Great job last Saturday!! These tough weeks of summer training are what make for great fall marathons. So whether you stayed in WP or ran the hills of Apopka, the humidity and temps that test us each week do add up to help us on those last few miles of our races. As Susan mentioned in last weeks mail very few of us come back from our marathons and say "I wish I had done less miles or hill work".
Before we get down to business a reminder Part II of Ruthie's send off is this Thursday July 14 at 310 Lakeside on Central in Downtown Orlando at 6:00
We are have our first long mileage week so it is important to keep a very easy pace and to practice your pre race and race day routine!!! This includes from your diet and hydration to what you plan to wear race day. Also don't forget the body glide this weekend!!
This weekend finds Ray, Jeri and myself out of town so once again Krystal will step up to help lead the group helped out by Hillery!!!! So once again we want to encourage everyone to help out by, obeying the safety rules, running on the left side of the road, and please be considerate of our WP neighbors.

This weeks mileage: Keep an easy pace for the long mileage:

Chicago/St. Louis/USMC/Savannah/ING NYG........16*
Space Coast........................................................ 14
Jacksonville......................................................... 14
Disney................................................................ 10
Goofy................................................................. 10
Half Marathon.................................................... 8

The Plan:

Pace Group Run Saturday July 9

Hi

Hope everyone had safe travels and enjoyed their 4th of July Weekend. Those of us who stayed home and ran around here had a great time at Ruthie's send off part I. We hope you can be a part of Ruthie's send off Part II which will be held at 310 Lakeside on Central Blvd in Downtown Orlando @ 6:00 pm Thursday July 14 stay tuned for more details!!
A couple of reminders, first as always please remember to hydrate during the week and during the run. Second watch your pace, long runs should be run 30 seconds to 1 minute SLOWER than your marathon pace. That means if you plan to run your marathon @ a 9:30 pace you should be running between a 10 minute to a 10:30 pace!!!! With these temperatures this high you should consider adjusting your pace to run even slower!! I know some of our veteran runners know this however we all need to be reminded from time to time that our weekend runs are NOT races, so pace accordingly. It you want to see what your running pace should be with walk breaks take a look at our training page and it will give you two links for calculators.
Now down to business, this weekend you will have a choice of two runs either a hill run in Apopka or stay in town and run from Cady Way.
I (Terry) will lead the run in Apopka and Ray will lead the run from Cady Way.
